Eclips - Zuidrand Klassiek
When Belgium experienced its last full solar eclipse in 1999, the horn players of the Korpus Quartet had only just seen the light. In its brand new concert programme ECLIPS, this young group explores this fascinating interplay of light and dark. With Jeroen Billiet as horn soloist, they perform contrasting works by Robert Schumann and Dmitri Shostakovich, among others, that take the audience to the brightest and darkest places of the universe and the human soul. They discover the twilight zone in between in an arrangement of L'Ascension, Olivier Messiaen's meditation on the Christian feast. In this programme, even more than its religious content, the work carries a promise of caring for our living world. If you missed the 1999 solar eclipse, this performance may be your best chance of ever experiencing one.
Date: Thursday 30 January 2025, 20h15

Heads up, folks! - Museum Vleeshuis
Attention, attention, ladies and gentlemen, and join us in this tantalising performance! In its primal form, the horn was already a signalling instrument, but actually throughout its history the same characteristic keeps recurring: attracting attention. To herald the hunt, announce the battle? Listen to the sound of the horn. An 18th century postal package on its way? Hear, hear, the honking of the post horn.
Meanwhile, of course, we are far removed from that era, but we have not become less clamorous for attention. Like an inspired brass band in a kiosk or enthusiastic buskers on the Meir - Korpus Kwartet puts together a programme that puts the horn in the spotlight. Or more accurately: where the horn puts itself in the spotlight. With music by Kurt Weill, Gioachino Rossini and Paul Hindemith, among others, and with extremes from the most fiery signal to the sweetest timbre, four horn players guide you through history in their own unique way.

Ascension - Arte Amanti
Korpus Quartet builds this performance around French composer Olivier Messiaen's L'Ascension, in an arrangement by Guillaume Michiels. It is a work originally written in two versions: one for symphonic orchestra and one for organ. The theme of the piece revolves around the church feast of Ascension, which normally takes place in May. In this programme, however, the work serves a different theme, not coincidentally on this day of Armistice Day. It deals with the transition between pain and recovery, between grief and mourning, or that between emptiness and light.
