Korpus Quartet builds this performance around French composer Olivier Messiaen's L'Ascension, in an arrangement by Guillaume Michiels. It is a work originally written in two versions: one for symphonic orchestra and one for organ. The theme of the piece revolves around the church feast of Ascension, which normally takes place in May. In this programme, however, the work serves a different theme, not coincidentally on this day of Armistice Day. It deals with the transition between pain and recovery, between grief and mourning, or that between emptiness and light.
